After the restoration it will become a cultural center, accommodation and a restaurant.
The name of Sarandira comes from Carandibe - a contraction of çaran-àib - it means: “the pairs or legs on which the Indians rolled the extracted wood”. Between 1850 and 1870, Juiz de Fora experienced the expansion of the coffee economy, along with the regional trend, becoming the main coffee producer in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, a position that it abandoned only in the first decades of the 20th century.
The Sarandira district was created in 1861 to receive most of the Italian immigrants who came to work on the coffee plantations. Already in 1906, Sarandira had more than 5 thousand inhabitants and was one of the great coffee producers in the region.
Currently Sarandira has a population of approximately 300 inhabitants and its economic activity is restricted to agriculture and livestock. However, it still holds important natural and cultural references and historical remnants of the extinct coffee economic cycle present in its architecture. The distance between Sarandira and the center of Juiz de Fora is 20 km, 300 km from Belo Horizonte and 180 km from Rio de Janeiro.
Today, the main attractions of the district are the Nossa Senhora do Livramento Church, built in 1886, and the Casarão de Sarandira - both listed by the municipal historical heritage and with ongoing restoration projects - the waterfalls of Sarandira and Castelo, the water mine miracle, the historic fountain, the Circuit of the Enchanted Murals and the old coffee farms in the region.
Sarandira is a rural district thatDOES NOT HAVE SUPERMARKETS AND PHARMACIESand is serviced by some bus schedules to Juiz de Fora. The nearest trade is 10 km away, in Pequeri. There is no regular transport to Pequeri.
The cell phone operator that widely serves the district isALIVE, but at the top of the church it is possible to connect through other operators.
Please be a conscientious visitor and respect the community. Come back often and we hope you take the best memories of the best moments of your life with you.
